Composed by David Lang. Lang’s music treats notes and silence with equal weight, beginning on a single-voice chant before building harmonic interest, allowing the voices to sporadically overlap into sonorities that are gone in an instant. At the end, the texture breaks into a woven polyphonic discourse between voices, repeatedly posing a hypothetical, both musically and rhetorically.
